Symmetry!

One of my favorite math concepts to introduce in kindergarten is symmetry.  It seems like once we talk about it, the kids are looking for symmetrical things everywhere!  I love the day that we create our symmetrical artwork.  I ask the kids to "tip and drip" the paint bottles to make a design on one side of their paper.
After our drips are complete, we fold the paper over and press it out.  The magic occurs when we peel the paper open.  Look at these precious faces full of excitement!

They are always amazed that their works of art are the same on both sides!

We also spent some time searching for signs of symmetry in nature.  We went outside and chose leaves that looked the same on both sides and made a leaf rubbing.

As we near Thanksgiving, please know how thankful I am that I get to spend my days with these awesome kids!  I feel like a lucky lady!

Happy Halloween!

We survived a fun day of costumes and special activities!  I loved seeing all the kids dressed up and bursting with excitement.  After our group photo, we sorted our costumes into categories:

Our day included a pumpkin investigation.  It cracks me up how many kids do not want to touch the pumpkin "goo"!  :)  We made observations, cleaned out the seeds, and counted them.  We decided it was much faster to count by tens!  I forgot to take pictures of the messy part (Probably because my hands were messy, too!  :))  Here we are getting ready to begin:

Finally, I love the display that Mrs. Finney made with the kids in Art last week.  Their owls are absolutely adorable...don't you think?!  :)

Welcome to my Blog!

I'd love to share some happenings of our days in KR!  Please check a few times per month for updates and photos of our classroom activities.  Please enjoy these pictures from this week's field trip!
Here we go!  SO excited to get to the park!
Kindergartners, kindergartners, what do you see?

Exploring the nature center!

Look how big I am!

We got to hold the turtles!

Our adventure of the day was to search for signs of fall.

We then used those little bits of fall to design colorful palettes!

Stop by Pence to see our collages on display!

We even squeezed in a little time to play with friends!

Good times!

We had a great day!  Therese complimented our class and wished she could keep us longer!  Parents, pat yourselves on the back for raising such wonderful kids!  They make me proud!

We had an extremely successful day.  All of the kids were on their best behavior -- they made me proud!

One Soggy Day

I have been meaning to post these pictures for about a month now!  Today is the perfect day to get it done.  Our trip to the Jefferson County Park was definitely a soggy one.  I can't thank my parent volunteers enough -- although the weather was miserable, we all enjoyed our time with Therese and created some special memories out in the rain!

We spent lots of time learning about frogs and toads and creating a "chorus" with combs, marbles, rubber bands, and our voices.  The inclement weather created the perfect opportunity to observe a real, live toad up close!

It was so chilly that he wasn't moving; this is why we could get really close!

Boys and toads!  :)

Our time in the nature center was fun, too.  My favorite part was the game show, but the kids loved using the binoculars (too bad most of the birds were hiding away from the rain!).

I love this picture.  "Look, Mom!  I'm the same size as a bear!"

These kids have climbed their way into my heart!  :)
